Weβre not about selling products - we want to solve problems and change lives through Monzo β€οΈ
πLondon or Remote (UK) | π°Β£68,000 - Β£88,000 + Benefits | 12 month fixed term contract
Every word we write matters. From whatβs in the app, to job ads (like this one), to error messages, to emails, to internal policies, toβ¦ you get the idea.
The Writing team isnβt responsible for writing every word though β weβre here to level up Monzoβs writing overall. We have a well-established tone of voice, and people here really care about making sure all our writing is consistently good and works hard for customers. Itβll be your job to keep that quality up through the writing you do. But youβll also be a champion for great writing by proving the difference it makes, and helping other people to improve their own writing skills.
Our never-ending reason to exist is to improve the overall quality of writing at Monzo. That means a culture where care for language is the norm. Everyone, in every role, should understand how important it is to write in a clear, empathetic way, and they should all have the skills to do it. The outcome of that will be world-leading writing for customers. Theyβll trust us because our writing is clear, effective and works hard for them.
Youβll get together with the other writers pretty regularly to review and showcase work, collect feedback and insights from one another and generally just raise the bar for words at Monzo. And as we hinted at already, youβll live and breathe our tone of voice, which is propped up by 3 guiding principles: straightforward kindness, everyday magic and warm wit.
Youβll be covering our Borrowing Writer while theyβre on caregiver leave
This is a 12-month fixed term contract covering for our Writer whoβs based in the Borrowing collective. That means youβll be focused on supporting teams working on things like loans, credit cards, overdrafts and other borrowing and credit related projects.
Youβll work closely with cross-functional squads of engineers, designers, marketers, researchers and so on to make it an amazing experience for existing customers, and bring new people on board.
A typical day could see you
- collaborating with a Product Designer on some in-app screens
- collaborating with a Product Marketer on positioning and building messaging toolkits for use across web, growth marketing or CRM
- sitting in on user research sessions led by the Research team
- writing error messages with input from engineers
- editing legal wording alongside our in-house lawyers
Your home will be in Writing
Alongside the work you do in Borrowing, youβll contribute to the Writing discipline. Weβre always working on new resources, training and processes to make writing easier for everyone at Monzo.
Writing is part of the wider Marketing team but this role isnβt only about marketing. In fact, thatβs a small part of the job. Your remit will be to improve the quality of the writing that touches your part of the business, inside Monzo and out.
This is for you if
- you understand borrowing and credit products well
- youβre a dab hand at βcontent designβ, βUX writingβ, βproduct writingβ
- youβre allergic to useless jargon and over-complicated language
- you know how to use data and research to guide your approach
- youβre okay bouncing between tasks on a daily basis
- youβre comfortable questioning a brief and helping people understand why your approach is the right one
- youβve done some training or coaching to help other people improve their writing, but this oneβs not essential.
This isnβt for you if
- itβs your first writing job β sorry, but we need someone to hit the ground running
- youβre a journalist or ad writer
- youβre only really excited by brand and marketing stuff β that isnβt the focus of this role
- you prefer to spend most of your time working solo β writing here is a team sport and youβll need to collaborate with everyone across the company
- you like lots of top-down direction β youβll be expected to decide which challenges you tackle with your team, and how to tackle them.
Youβll get
- the chance to shape the role around whatβs good for you, and us
- very flexible working β we care about what you do, not the minutes you work or where you do it (we love to see our teammates in the office but you donβt have to come in if you donβt want to)
- a whole load of benefits, including a personal training budget, health insurance, generous caregiving leave and more you can read about here: https://monzo.com/careers/
Please make sure you give us both a CV and a cover letter. This is a writing job after all; you should want to show us what you can do. A cover letter also helps us understand why you want the job vs a CV which often just tells us why you might be able to do the job.
