Things to Put in Your Cover Letter

A recent look at the job application process revealed that human resource teams are about to abolish the cover letter. This doesn’t mean that it is not in use currently. Recruiters spend little time going through job candidates’ materials. Only a few still consider the cover letter important. That doesn’t mean jobs have stopped asking for a cover letter along with your other application documents such as CV. So if you are going to submit one, ensure it is in line with the job opportunity you are chasing. The cover letter should meet the following:

Proof that you have researched the position

Recruiters and those in charge of hiring will need to see that you know what you’re applying for. From the get-go, it’s important that you refer to the job, its title and the company in some form. Don’t shy away from praising your potential employers. Impress your potential employers by acknowledging the company’s success. This section of the letter can be in an informal setting.

An explanation of how your skills relate

Your cover letter is a written testament to your skills that compliment your resume. While your resume is general, your cover letter should fit the job opportunity. Explain in detail the skill set you are bringing to the company in relation to the job position. You also need to explain the significance of your previous job to the current job opportunity.

Show enthusiasm for the job

Being able to convey some form of emotion in a cover letter will help set you apart from your competitors. As mentioned before, recruiters have less time to go through your application materials so don’t go overboard. Compose a cover letter that will make them remember you by. This might be the difference between you and the next best candidate.

Use specific words and phrases from the job description.

When composing your cover letter make use of the information provided. Use the language in the job posting to show recruiters that you are a worthy candidate. Doing this makes it easier for the recruiters to go through your letter. Using keywords from the job posting might help your chances of getting called for an interview if the organization uses an automated application screening system.

Include a referral

You can try and establish a connection with the recruiters by including a referral in your letter. This will make your cover letter noticeable and stand out. This will give you an extra edge over other candidates.

Market yourself

We have already established that your letter is the bridge between your resume and the job posting. Make sure it does just that by trying to explain why you are the best fit for the position. Make sure you do all this in short and clear sentences as the cover letter should be relatively short.

By doing all this, your letter is sure to stand out among recruiters which is what we are targeting for.
